'Attack on Titan' Speculation: "What we can share so far..."

The greatest part of speculative discussion is that someone might point out something that I missed, allowing me to either improve or altogether abandon my own theories. However, the unexpected popularity of my Attack on Titan posts has created an unforeseen problem: the comments sections are a bit of a mess and the amount of edits I've made to each post is bordering on the ridiculous. The posts have become disorganized, and are much in need of abridgment. So, here we go... (WARNING! Spoilers up to Episode 25!)

FYI: I own the first four tankoban (collection of chapters) of the manga, but I haven't read them. I had a hard time deciding whether I should read ahead and spoil the surprise or wait for each episode and enjoy the feeling of suspense I get every time the next episode ends. After a long struggle, I decided on the latter. I say this to let everyone know that I don't know anything more than what's shown the anime. I, along with many others, enjoy the act of speculation and the creation of theories. So, please... NO MANGA SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS.

Or else...
QUESTION 1:
WHAT'S IN THE BASEMENT?

THEORY 1: KNOWLEDGE AND/OR TECHNOLOGY
What if he has a computer, or some other sufficiently advanced technology, in the basement? A computer with all sorts of data on it regarding the titans, and machines and technology to produce the "titan juice"? In episode nine, while Eren is having a flashback to when his dad injected him with the titan elixir, the subs I watched say, "I'm sure Their memories will teach you how to use it."

While these are not official subs, I have to wonder what "it" is, and how "Their" (capital 'T') memories will help him to know how to use whatever "it" is. Perhaps he may have a computer, or some other form (or forms) of technology (maybe even as simple as a book), from ages past containing all sorts of knowledge on the titans locked away in the basement. But why in the world, if whatever was down there was really so important, did he keep it a secret?

THEORY 2: UNDERGROUND BUNKER COMPLEX
Instead of the technology being in the basement itself, could the basement be an entrance to a bunker beneath the walled area? Is it an elevator or stairwell leading down into the bowels of a vast network of laboratories? Is said bunker where Eren's father gathered his knowledge of medicine and did his research? Did he find the titan elixir there?

What secrets are you hiding?
From what's been said before, I doubt Eren's father is hiding there. If he was, he would be the one to show Eren how to use whatever's down there instead of relying on the memories within the titan elixir to teach him how to use it. This theory would seemingly go hand in hand with the first theory above. If there is a bunker beneath the walled areas, then someone with vastly superior technology would have had to build it (and the walls for that matter). Such a bunker could also be the origin of the 3DM gear, whose innards and workings are a heavily guarded secret known only by a select few (as we are told by another "What we can share so far" card). But all this raises another question: if Eren's father knows about this, how many others know? And just how much do they really know?

THEORY 3: A RELIC OF SORTS
In the the second ending, we see a mural seemingly depicting two kingdoms going to war (as explained in the beginning of "Question 1.5"). There are a few things that we can pick out just from the mural itself:

(Brightened for easier viewing)
One, there are two sides, two different colors representing two different groups of people. Each side has what appears to be a banner behind them, the battle standards of their kingdoms. But what jumps out at me is the "reticle" in the middle... which is probably not a reticle at all. It almost looks like an "illuminated object" or a "holy relic". Perhaps this is what the two kingdoms were fighting over, and perhaps this is what they used to create the titan serum. If so, is this relic in the basement? Is it an actual, supernatural "holy relic", or is it piece of technology whose method of creation has been lost to time?

NEW!: QUESTION 1.5:
"WHO" IS DR. YEAGER?

Perhaps a better question to ask is WHO is Eren's father? Where did he come from? While I haven't done a terrible amount of research myself on this, several commentors have speculated that the kingdom within the walls is not the only kingdom in the world of Attack on Titan. This brings up a whole new aspect of said world: world politics.

The second ending is a great source for speculation: The differences in colors would indicate that these are two different factions, and since it was the first image to appear, I would assume the wall is a pictorial representation of the world's history. Here, they seem to be raising weapons, i.e. at war with each other.
THEORY 1: THE DEFECTOR
Perhaps Dr.Yeager is a defector from the other kingdom, one with knowledge of the other kingdom's "titan program". He came to the walls for asylum, cured a plague to gain the locals' trust (which could have been a biological weapon released by the other kingdom... maybe), and found a home within the walls.

Now here is where the speculation goes into overdrive: what if the whole reason for the attacks on the walls was to find and reclaim Dr. Yeager? The other kingdom sent their spies to the walls, found out Dr. Yeager was in Shiganshina, then called for an attack on the town to capture Dr. Yeager. They weren't able to find him (possibly because he wasn't actually in Shiganshina when the attack happened), but were able to track down his son at Trost five years later (or perhaps Dr. Yeager was in Trost), hoping that he knew where his father was. But if that's so, why did it take five years to find Eren? It wasn't like he was hiding... See, not all theories are without holes...

He seemed none too happy about the attack on Shiganshina, so I doubt he had anything to do with ordering the attack.
I'm guessing that the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan are both from the other kingdom. I don't believe Annie is though: I think she's another of Dr. Jaeger's experiments OR one of the kingdom within the walls hybrid titans. Annie's job seemed to be "capturing" Eren, not "killing" him, which means she/they are after the same thing: finding Dr. Yeager. He knows something very important, which could also be the answer to what lies in the basement... (Thanks to A Virgin Theory for bringing this question to my attention)

THEORY 2: GOVERNMENT FUNDED RESEARCHERS
SWEET CUPPIN' CAKES! I never put two and two together! Thanks to Roger's comment below, I've had an epiphany that led to another theory. Annie's flashback in episode 25 would seem to take place somewhere around the same time as the titans first attacked Shiganshina. In the early episodes of the anime, we see Annie walking around town by herself (Episode 2, when young Eren and Mikasa are talking and Armin brings them food), which leads me to believe her father left her as well or that she had to leave him...

What if Annie's father and Eren's father were both part of a scientific group, sanctioned by the government, to study the titans and come up with a way to fight back against them? They created the titan serum in order to fight back, but some of the scientists had differing opinions on its potential use. Some wanted to use the serum while some didn't, or some wanted to use the serum for good while some wanted to use it for evil or to overthrow the king. When the "hybrid" titans attacked and breached the wall, the government cracked down on the only people to have had that sort of technology: the scientists. Both fathers injected their children, then fled from the government and went into hiding.

In Annie's case, however, I speculate that her father brought her with him into hiding. He gave her the serum, explained its use, possibly trained her in its use, then sent her back to civilization to a place where she could keep an eye on what was going on in the kingdom. She became a member of the military police for precisely this reason: to get to the center of civilization and observe. This is why, at least in the translation I watched, her father says, "Promise me... That you will return..."

When Eren (and the entire city) became aware of his titan powers, she was ordered to capture him and bring him to where they were hiding so they could explain their predicament and the government's involvement in all this. When she couldn't capture him, and in turn became the target for capture herself, she tried to escape so she could keep the promise she made.

QUESTION 2:
WHERE DID THE TITANS COME FROM?

THEORY: EXPERIMENT GONE WRONG
While watching episode 15 again to refresh my memory, I listened to Hanji's explanation of her experiments and experiences with the titans that the Legion has captured or killed. It was expressed here (and possibly a few times before and after episode 15) that the titans are far lighter in weight than they should be. Something that size shouldn't be able to stand, much less walk or run, but they can because their bodies are lighter. She then says (in the translation I read) that, "The titans we see and the titans of actuality might be different things all together." Does this mean that the titans we've seen throughout the show are "fake" titans? If so, what are "real" titans?

This one... wasn't real?
Option A: There was an "original titan", its body unearthed by ancient humans and experimented on. Perhaps titan regenerative properties were discovered, prompting experiments that attempted to either clone the titan or introduce titan DNA into humans. These were disastrous, and resulted in the world we see in the show. Perhaps this is what Hanji meant by "the titans of actuality".

Option B (Best Guess): The titans are a human creation, the result of super soldier research gone terribly wrong. This could be supported by the explanations given in episode five: They ignore animals other than humans. Their sole purpose is the consumption of humans, even though they don't need to eat to survive. The logical answer is that the titans are programmed that way, their desire to kill humans written into their instincts.

Option C : A mixture of theory one and two.

I'm willing to bet that all the titans were at one point human, injected with a "titan elixir" that allowed them to transform into titan-like beings, either for scientific or military purposes. However, the titan instincts were too powerful, and the titan and human parts ended up fusing together when the humans lost control. This has almost happened to Eren. He's almost lost it while in titan form, even going so far as to strike out at Mikasa in the battle for Trost. This "fused" theory answers why the titans who are not hybrids can still be killed by a blow to the neck. The core nervous system is still in the neck, so when the neck is cut, the titan dies. Because the two parts are fused, when the titan body dissolves, the fused human bits dissolve too.

QUESTION 3:
WHERE DID THE WALLS COME FROM?
(AND WHY ARE THERE TITANS INSIDE OF THEM?)

Unfortunately, someone commented a spoiler on the composition of the walls, which I unintentionally read when moderating them. I wasn't a theory-shattering spoiler, but it wasn't something that had been covered in the anime. It allowed me to make an educated guess as to how the walls were made, therefore, I'll only speculate on why the walls were made so as to not make spoilers of my own.

The "What we can share so far" cards before and after the commercial break of episode 25 give us a story of a miner who tried to dig under one of the walls so that he could live in prosperity on the other side. From this story we find out that the walls go underground, deep underground. Not only that, they also extend beneath the ground like bedrock. This is an incredible piece of information, one only superseded by the mind-blowing revelation after episode 25's credits.

Sweet cuppin' cakes...
Such an incredible revelation gives us some insight into where the walls come from. The creation of such walls is far beyond humanity's present abilities, and therefore must have been built by an advanced, long dead civilization. How many titans are in the walls? Are they shoulder to shoulder in there, miles apart, or somewhere in between? More importantly, why were they built?

THEORY 1: PRISON BREAK
What if the titans were originally inside the walls, sort of like a prison or a nature preserve? This theory could work in tandem with the "Experiment Gone Wrong" theory above: the ancient humans created the titans, the titans became uncontrollable, the humans locked them away to keep them from destroying the world. However, in order to create walls that were strong enough to hold back the titans, the walls were built around a number of human hybrids for extra durability.

However, someone came along and opened the doors, either on purpose or accidentally, and released the scourge of the titans on the world. They nearly wiped out humanity, but the survivors found these amazing walls and decided to move in. They built cities and reinforced the walls with gates, and for a hundred years knew peace... until the fire nation attacked until the Colossal Titan kicked in the door. In effect, the wardens became the prisoners.

THEORY 2 (Best Guess): LAST BASTION OF HUMANITY
The same idea could be said for a sort of last bastion of humanity. The titans were created or appeared and nearly wiped humanity out, but a few survivors sectioned off an area in which humanity could survive. Human hybrids encased themselves inside the walls to make them stronger OR were encased so that if the wall was breached they'd be there to stop the titan advance. The first is more likely, as it would seem the wall would be significantly weakened if every titan inside suddenly decided to jump out. Survivors from all around, hearing of the safe haven that had been created, flocked to the walls, which is why you have Asians like Mikasa in a sea of various European peoples.

The second ending's mural depicts ships sailing away from a land overrun by titans and landing near the walls.
You can also see what appears to be a group of people heading to the walls (far left). These could be the refugees from the ships that found their way to the safety of the walls, giving the population inside the small amount of variety that we see in the show.
But why doesn't anyone remember these things? A hundred years is a short time to forget something as important as "there are titans in the walls". It's obvious that someone knows, given that the humans are using advanced technology (3DM gear) and the existence of the "titan elixir" and "modern" hybrids. But why don't the rest of the population know?

QUESTION 4:
NOT "WHAT" OR "WHERE", BUT "WHEN"?

An equally as important question to be asking as any: What is the timeline of events that have led us to this world? The title card of the first episode says, "To You, 2,000 Years in the Future", but that's not as important as the current year: 845. What event happened 845 years ago that was so significant as to warrant a calendar reset? I can fathom only two things: either the titans first appeared/were created, or the walls were built.

THEORY: THE BUILDING/APPEARANCE/DISCOVERY OF THE WALLS WAS THE "SIGNIFICANT EVENT"
The near annihilation of the human race by the titans is a significant event, one that could warrant the calendar reset, but I think that the halting of such an event and the restarting of civilization would be more significant. I interpret the resetting of the calendar to be a sign of the "start" of something new, a new age of mankind in this case. I could understand the creation or discovery of a "safe bastion of humanity" as the point at which humanity believed it stood a chance of survival.

Not sure if it's an official translation, but...
They say that there have been a hundred years of peace within the walls, but were the walls actually built a hundred years ago? At first I thought that's what they meant, but now I don't believe that. As the picture of Armin above states, the walls hadn't been breached in a hundred years, which mean that they would have had to exist before then. As I said above, a hundred years seems an awful short time for people to forget where the walls came from and how they were built, but 845 years seems a lot more plausible. The complacent attitudes felt by many of the soldiers in the beginning would make more sense: they've never had to deal with the overwhelming sense of inevitable annihilation.

A FINAL WORD: THANKS!
So there you have it. All the speculation so far, summarized and in one convenient location. Now all there is to do is wait for them to decide to make the next season. The temptation to read the books is strong. Thanks to all those who participated in the previous discussions, and please feel free to continue the discussion in the comments below. But remember, be a decent human being: PLEASE NO SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS.

Did you really think I would forget... DEM EYES?

  1. Sorry for my bad english But Attack on titan is just WoooW!!!! I think the titan are created by the human and they work on this because titan spawn all the time in the south. Sorry for my bad english again. I love this blog :) continue like this.

    1. Thanks for reading and I'm glad you enjoy it! I do plan on continuing the speculation as soon as we get more episodes, which I'm sure will happen eventually.

  2. I never gave the title "To you, 2,00 years in the Future" much thought but I wish I should have. I think the year 845 is just how far these humans can date back there existence. What this title means is that this is no after-apocalyptic story, but one before the very earth we humans exist in today! I guess that gets rid of the knowledge-archive-in-the-bunker theory where the information of our existence lays. This title means we haven't even been brought to existence yet! Quite the Ragnarok rebirth type of story.

    1. Not so. They've made a point about saying that Mikasa was the last of the Asian/Oriental race. Also, if Attack on Titan took place 2,000 years ago, it would put it during the height of the Roman Empire. The way I interpret the title is that it's 2,000 years into the future from now, from our current, modern existence.

However, there is the possibility that this is not Earth at all. I don't remember if it said that this absolutely was Earth in the anime (I've looked and I can't find it), although the translations would suggest that it is.

    2. Personally I believe it to be around the 17-1800s as they have guns. I think the history change is because of the strict martial laws regarding knowledge from the outside world. They changed the year because they wanted to further exclude themselves from the world they left behind.

    3. Can't forget the German, Polish, and general European motifs throughout-- that's why I personally support the future-earth theory. Unless the origin was space Nazis, I don't see a separate planet evolving into Earth-Germany.

    4. I think it said in the middle of one of the episodes that the first Titans appeared 107 years ago? I mean the words that say "Currently Displayable Information" or something like that in the middle of every episode

  3. That is true. I forgot about Mikasa's ethnicity reference.

  4. Up through Volume 8 is safe for anything different from the anime, since that's what the anime covers. You can safely read your four volumes.

Though those subs are unnofficial, I can confirm Grisha's line is in the manga.

Since you were spoiled for the composition of the walls, would you like to see the theory I've been dying to show you for the longest time which I couldn't show you only because of the composition of the walls spoiler?

  5. I just watched the whole anime (didn't realize it was this new). They said the titans appeared a little over 100 years prior right? They also said in the first episode that Eren's father helped eradicate a plague from the entire town. I have a feeling he might have had something to do with it and was testing on humans or was researching titans and used something there to get rid of the plague.

I just can't stop thinking WHAT'S IN THE BASEMENT!?! I doubt Eren's dad is just hiding out there since he just told Eren that eventually he had to get down there. I had similar thoughts that there's some ancient technology that relates to the titans down there.

Is there any word on when/if a second season of the anime will start up?

    1. I heard sometime in 2015, but don't quote me on that. To be honest, I don't know if I'm going to make it that long...

    2. That was my estimate based on the frequency of chapter releases and what the first season covered.

The first season covered about 34 chapters, so if a second season were to do the same, it would be at around Chapter 68 that they'd have enough material. Chapters come out monthly and this month Chapter 55 came out, leaving 13 chapters to be released (and months to wait), leading us to 2015.

On top of that though, the anime didn't start until the manga was on Chapter 44, 10 chapters further from what it covers, which could mean we may not see a second season until around Chapter 78 which would be another 10 months from then which would mean 2016. But it's so popular I imagine they would hop on it the minute they can so long as they can end it on a big fight like the first season.

Since around chapter 50 was said to be the mid-point by the author of the manga, I imagine there will also be a 3rd season covering the last 3rd of the chapters, if Season 2 should cover up to 68 or so.

  6. In the post I noticed mini question in a picture caption asking why the colossal titan is so big. The reason why the Titan is so big is because it is actually a human-titan, every time the colossal titan shows up, a lightning bolt comes out of the sky. The same thing happens whenever Eren or Annie transform into titan (I hope this isn't a spoiler but I don't actually know since I never read the manga).

You also asked "What is in the basement?" but a better question is "who is Dr. Jaeger?". From what we know of Dr. Jaeger, he is a travelling Doctor who saved his city from a epidemic, he had a wife and has a son, and also knows what is in the basement. Everyone seems to know the doctor even Eren's training officer, and everyone seems to speak so highly of him. If the doctor is who everyone says he is then he would of alerted the government or military about the human-titans, but he didn't. There is also the fact that he injected Eren with some sort of Drug, that is probably linked with the human-titan ability. This kind of information isn't something that could secretly be passed down generation after generation, it would have had to come from...the outside world(probably another kingdom). Meaning that he immigrated into the kingdom(with friends), and setup a lab/study/bunker in the basement. Since it would be hard to sneak secret tech into the kingdom (which includes sources of electricity), the basement is probably full of research papers/books about titans and other technologies(not a futuristic laboratory).

    1. As for why the Colossal Titan is so big, saying that it's a human hybrid doesn't really answer the question. Why aren't Eren and Annie that big in titan form? Can he choose how big he gets, or is it a set thing? This is what I'm really asking. What makes him get so big?

As for "Who is Dr. Yeager"... that is a very important question. To be honest, I've put Attack on Titan on the back burner for now, partly because I have other things to do and because I want something else on my mind to keep me occupied until season 2. However, I've heard over and over that there are two kingdoms. My theory (which is completely un-researched, mind you) is that Dr. Yeager is a defector from the other kingdom. What if the whole reason for the attack on Shigansha and subsequent attack on Trost was to find and reclaim Dr. Yeager?

... OH MAN. THE BRAINS ARE WORKING. ALL NEW SPECULATION INCOMING.

Thanks for the idea, and now I shall run with it.

    2. *vibrates in place because of manga spoilers*

The 2 Kingdoms idea I think comes because of the Titan Shifters' "home" as well as the inside of the manga covers telling a brief story of the titans' first appearance, one event of which was the disappearance of half the human ships, which I theorize to be the Titan Shifters' "home's" origin.

    3. I think the colossal titan is so big because they can choose what they become maybe? I'm thinking so because when Erin was attacked by a cannon in the anime he thought of blocking the shell and he became an arm to block it. Or when he picked up the fork. That's my theory :) maybe Erin just doesn't realize it to take advantage of it?

      Delete
    4. Maybe it depends how much titan serum thing is injected into them? Maybe the colossal titan had heaps injected and thats why hes so tall. And isnt Eren like a 15 metre? Cause that syringe looked like it had quite abit in it. Just my little theories.

  7. First, let me start by saying I found this blog yesterday and have already recommended it to several friends. The Attack on Titan posts are extremely well written and insightful, pointing out tons of things that I, as a huge fan of the series (anime only, no knowledge of the manga) thus far, had completely overlooked. With that said, I just have a few pieces of "food for thought".

    1. If it's been established in the series that titans fall into an essentially dormant state when deprived of sunlight (i.e. the experiments with Sawney and Bean) then why haven't the humans lead an attack on titans during the night? During Eren's first expedition outside of Wall Rose, they traveled during daylight hours. Wouldn't it be far less risky to enter the territory of your enemy when it is essentially incapacitated? Does this "Law of Energy" apply to human-titans like Annie and Eren as well? Or are hybrids powered by something other than the sun?

    2. According to AoT's wikia page (be careful what you read on this site, I've had several friends encounter some major spoilers), Annie, Reiner, and Bertolt all come from the same village. I've also read comments on the rest of the related posts on this site that point out their suspicious behavior. Examples include Reiner questioning Bertolt as to why he's so willing to discuss his encounter with the titans during military training and Bertolt ending his story abruptly with the lame excuse that "everything was fuzzy after that". As if encountering a giant man-eating beast for the first time in your life and watching it destroy your homeland is something that's easy to forget. As we know, Annie is in fact the Blonde Titan and comparisons show that Reiner does, if even slightly, resemble the Armored Titan. Reiner, in my mind, also has to be they spy within the Survey Corps because, as you pointed out, Erwin gave everyone different information as to where Eren would be located within the formation. Reiner was told Eren would be in the right flank and the right flank was ambushed. Even if he isn't a titan, he's still fighting for another team? Where Bertolt fits into this I'm not sure. Could he be the Colossal Titan? If so, why is it that these three people (all of whom come from the same place) are so bent on the destruction of humanity? My guess (as lame as it is) is that all three of them were injected with "Titan Juice" at a young age in an attempt to utilize them as weapons against the Titans. As to why they would now go to great lengths to knock down walls and endanger the very thing they were tasked to protect? My guess for that would have to be that they possess the information locked in Dr. Yeager's basement, or something to the effect of that. Something had to have changed drastically to turn humanity's defenders into it's most formidable enemy. Perhaps the Titans act as somewhat of a purge or negative-feedback loop. Mankind may have committed an amount of "sins" and the Titans are the result; a mass cleanse of the Earth from it's abusers. Perhaps the information Dr. Yeager possess is that which not only illustrates the history of the Titans, but of the many transgressions of mankind. This is just a thought though. I still am more invested in your idea of two kingdoms engaged in Titan warfare!

    1. I'm glad you're enjoying the blog, and thanks for the recommendations! To be honest, life has been pretty crazy lately and the blog isn't getting as much attention as I wish I could give it. But I'm glad you're enjoying it!

      1. If we look back in history, most ventures, be it battles or travelling, were done during the day. The main reason: visibility. Humans rely so heavily on sight that we become nearly useless when it's impaired or lost (not to belittle blind people, but that's just how it is). It's true that the titans would be dormant at night, and humans would have the advantage... but not much. You can't fight what you can't see, even if it isn't moving.

      2. I don't think the fact that the three of them lived in the same town was mentioned in the anime (maybe Bertolt and Reiner, but not Annie), so that's a bit of a spoiler. If that's how it is, then the idea that they're all titans is more plausible. As you pointed out, Erwin told Reiner that the right flank would be attacked, and that's where Blondie attacked. Reiner also should have been crushed by Blondie, but he wasn't. This is the best evidence that they're in cahoots.

Blondie did resemble Annie and the Armored Titan does look like Reiner, but the Colossal Titan doesn't look anything like Bertolt. In fact, we've seen very little of Bertolt since the attack on Trost (I think he was there, but I don't even remember seeing him then). To be honest, I don't know who the Colossal Titan is.

      Interesting "transgressions of mankind" theory.

THE MAIN QUESTION: Whatever is in the basement is the key to everything. Dr. Yeager is presumably still missing, which also makes him a "key" of sorts. I think the faction Annie and the other hybrid titans belong to are looking for him, and that he's not on their side. Otherwise he would have told Eren to trust the hybrid titans instead of forcing everything on his shoulders.

    2. This guy is very attentive. Bravo.

I'd like you guys to think about this: how do you think a Titan Shifter activates his/her powers after being injected? And I don't just mean something like letting their blood out. How do they attain the power in the first place? How does one activate the serum in their blood stream?

I really can't wait for Season 2 for you guys to see a lot of the truths/evidence told in the manga since what Season 1 covers.

    3. It seems that the first time Eren did it was because of his incredible rage and desire to kill the titans. He kind of explains it later that he needs a purpose in order to transform. I would assume that the ability to transform and control the titan body would become easier over time and practice, but we can only speculate because we've only really seen Eren learning how to do it.

There is the possibility that the catalyst is different for each person. Right now, we just don't know enough about the process from the anime's point of view.

  8. 3. I'm literally sitting here re-watching the series, kicking myself for missing this last piece of information. Admittedly, I always skip the ending credits because I don't want to see the previews of the upcoming episodes and spoil the fun. But after observing some stills you captured from the second ending sequences of the series I decided to take a second look. What I found is that there are totally tons of Titans in the wall. Which wall? I don't know. Is it all three? I seriously don't know! But the second to last image of the credits (from episode 14 on wards) just before they show the main characters lined up, saluting, features two large beings, presumably Titans, hand to hand (like paper dolls) surrounded by what appear to be bricks both above and below. Now if that isn't subtle I don't know what is. Check it out for yourselves!

Sorry this is so long, but this site definitely gets my wheels turning.

    1. I hadn't noticed the image of the titans in the walls! Good catch there. My question is what are those angel things in between them? Are they merely decoration or do they mean something?

As for which wall they're in, I would venture to assume that all the walls have titans in them. For one, they're all the same, massive size. Two, the titans that attacked the wall only attacked the gates, which I assume means they know that the rest of the wall is nigh impenetrable because of the titans inside. Lots of assumptions, but they make sense given the facts.

    2. Let me pose you a question for your thought and contemplation. Was anyone, especially Eren in titan form, able to break Annie's hardened skin?

      Delete
    3. I want to say yes. It looked like Eren was able to bite through Annie's leg in episode 25, but he didn't actually bite it off so I can't say for sure. It was cracking though...

Is this question a bit of information to try and spur on further debate? If so, I don't quite understand how...

  9. It's just one more idea to think about. I'd say more but I don't want to spoil you guys and want you guys to come up with your own conclusions.

  10. No one was able to "break" Annie's harden skin, but when I was re-watching the series I noticed a couple of small details from the early episodes that I missed. If you go back to episode 1 you would notice that when the Colossal and Iron giant attacked they did not engage the other titans, in fact the titans were actually following them, much like how the follow Eren or Annie. Another small detail that hasn't been mentioned is that Annie was in episode 2 when Armin was giving bread to Eren and Mikasa. These are pretty significant details, that can easily be missed.

With these new found facts I came to one conclusion. Annie and the other two human titans (we all know who they are... damn spoilers, there even on Google images) are not in some sort of alliance or team. How do I know this? I'm glad you didn't ask but I'm going to tell you anyways. In episode 25 when Annie was having flash backs she was WITH her father, meaning that the flash backs took place before the attack on wall Maria, since she was an orphan collecting food in episode 2. Also when Annie was trying to capture Eren, she was working alone and not with the others. Also she seemed very...desperate... to capture Eren alive, and if the human titans were actually as desperate as Annie, they would of helped her out. If my theory is correct than Annie was trying to capture Eren for 1 reason, to help him (maybe she's a good guy?). This is what I noticed after the first couple of episodes of my re-watch, I hope this gives you guys some food for thought

    1. That's what I had been thinking, that there is more than one group of hybrids each working for different goals. However, there's that little problem in episode 17: Reiner should have been crushed by Annie. There's two possibilities. One, he's actually a titan hybrid who's working WITH her and she didn't actually crush him. It was all an act. Or two, he's actually a titan hybrid and protected himself from her crushing grip. At first I thought he might have just regenerated after being crushed, but that would seem way too fast to come back after every bone in his body was crushed.

However, now that we know the titans can harden themselves, perhaps he hardened himself before she crushed him. That's a new one I just thought of a few seconds ago. I can't believe I didn't think of that before.

If Annie had been out to kill Eren, she could have done that easily enough as a human. My question is: why doesn't she just come right out and tell him face to face? The only reason I can think of is that she doesn't know how he'd react to the revelation, and that it'd be safer to capture him and keep him in a controlled environment until she could be sure he'd react the way she wants him to. Either that, or she's being ordered to capture him. Like you, I also don't believe she's the real villain here.

Which brings me to a second question: are we sure that she was an orphan in episode 2? I too noticed her in the background, but just because she's there doesn't mean she's an orphan. What if her father is one of the masterminds of a faction, or perhaps a doctor like Dr. Yeager? We don't really have any solid proof that her father is dead, and I don't think she was trying to capture Eren of her own accord. We also don't know that the flashbacks took place before the attack on Wall Maria.

I'm planning on re-watching the series again here over the next few weeks. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for anything I may have missed. Thanks for the ideas!

    2. Perhaps Annie wanted Eren because he had something she wanted. Maybe the human titans wanted another human titan for their team. Or maybe there's something special about him that the other human titans don't have.

Maybe he'll get a special power later on like skin hardening but maybe something different that we haven't seen before.

And do you think that power of attracting titans Annie used with her scream can be learned by other people? And perhaps in a different way?

I don't know these are just some ideas I had.

      Delete
    3. I don't think attracting titans is a power. I think that she screamed really loud to get the titans' attention, and they came running to do what they do best: eat humans. The titans in Trost attacked Eren in much the same way, as if they knew he wasn't like them. I think that Annie knew the titans would eat her, and that there would be too many of them for the Survey Corps to do anything about it. It was a way for her to escape, not a power.

As for Eren developing powers, I think it's a real possibility. Every hybrid titan we've seen so far has had some form of power different than the others, such as the Colossal Titan's size, Annie's skin hardening, and the Armored Titan's armor. I don't think the "berserk mode" we saw in episode 25 was Eren's power, but it could have been. We'll see...

    5. Again, that "berserk mode" was just the anime making the fight pretty. Just an aesthetic and it didn't look like that in the manga.

And how would you say they're really different? I'd chock size up to a different element (not revealed yet in the manga), so the Colossal titan doesn't have that really as a unique trait. Honestly I'd say his unique trait if you were to consider it one is his ability to weaponize his heat radiation (shown at the beginning of the Trost arc, when Eren fought him).

I also think that it's quite possible for any titan shifter to attain all the powers displayed by other titan shifters, though recent manga details may leave that up to debate.

      Delete
  11. I don't think that the Colossal Titan's size isn't some form of power, in both attacks on the walls there was the lighting (Titan Form Activation), the kicking down of the gate (The objective), and the disappearance (The Escape). I noticed that the Titan simply disappeared not run away, this is something that is unique to this titan (power?). When a human escapes from Titan from, the body doesn't disappears, it sticks around for a while. Also the size of the Human-Titan is defiantly not some sort of power, if the drug that Dr. Jaeger gave Eren gave Eren the ability to become a Titan (depends on the theory), there would of been a lot of experimenting involved to get the drug to that point. Also if all of the Human-Titans were injected with the same drug they would more or less be all the same, not completely different from one another (except for Annie and Eren). This would mean that there are many different versions of the drug, not just one. Also I realized that there are huge similarities between Titans and Zombies, interesting when you think about it.

    1. Giant... zombies? *Shivers*

What if the Colossal Titan is so big, he can't move? What if he can only maintain that form for a few minutes? Your point about the drug is a good point, but I think it's the other way around. It might be the same drug, but everyone has a different reaction to it. Medicine today has that same problem. Not everyone's body reacts the same way to the medicine we take. I think their varying powers are a result of these differences, not because the drug itself is different.

Although, if we go by the "warring kingdoms" theory, then there very well could be multiple forms of a "titan drug". Both sides could have produced one of their own, or one could have stolen the other's, or the one that stole the other's is a weaker, tamer version while the original creator has improved upon it.

      Delete
  12. If the Colossal Titan can only maintain his form for a few minutes, then why does the body disappear? Also when Annie was in Titan form and crushed Reiner, people said that he "hardened" but I haven't actually seen anyone else harden besides Annie. What if Reiner "teleported" away from Annie instead of harden, Also I'm pretty sure the Armored Titan doesn't chose whether or not to be hard, I think he naturally is hard. The hardened states of the two Titans are also completely different, when Annie's joint is hardened, she can't move that joint, but the Armored Titan can move with free will while hard. The entire encounter doesn't make a lot of sense.

    1. I don't really see the logic in Reiner "teleporting" out of her hand and then back into it to chop her fingers off. You're right about it not making much sense. If she didn't crush him because she knew him, or she was in league with him, or for some other reason, why was there blood shooting out from in between her fingers when she did? If she did crush him, how did he survive? Did he do a "hardening" of his own? Perhaps he is able to use some of his powers outside of titan form, much like how Annie encased herself in crystal? I don't know what to make of it frankly...

      Delete
    2. Personally I think that Reiner wrote on her hand which would explain why there was blood, it was hers, not his. When I first saw that scene I thought he'd only been crushed a bit but (it's been a while since I've seen the anime) the blood on Reiner eventually evaporates like Titan blood.

  14. It seems to me my comment was eaten, so I'll try again.
I just finished watching episodes 1-25 and have some speculation of my own of this awesome series.
The calendar reset 850 years ago could be the discovery of the first titan. Humanity being around 1150 years from now would be far more advanced so they can unlock the secrets of these titans.
I would assume that humans found how to make titan/human hybrids and helped out their civilization. Also they were used as weapons. Perhaps it was also discovered how to make humanless titans in mass production. My guess was that they used cannibals as a base to create a weapon of mass destruction against an enemy population only for them to be uncontrollable and wipe out most of humanity.
As for the walls, I don't think the titans inside are there for defense. The one at the end was facing inside. If they were for defense, I would assume they would be facing outwards.
I don't think the titans inside the walls are "fake" titans, because I believe Hange mentioned keeping them in the dark for too long would kill them. I don't think they are human hybrids because the humans would eventually age and die. Perhaps they are real titans. I say this because unless they are standing on shoulders, they are about 50 meters tall. The only other titan to be that tall is the collosal titan, and he is the only one. The next tallest are 15 meters.
Now as for Eren's and Annie's fathers, I think they are both dead. Eren's father was crying when he was about to administer the serum. This was the last memory Eren seems to have of his dad. My guess was that upon injection, it caused Eren to transform, ultimately killing Eren's father accidently. He probly knew of this, and sacrificed himself to protect Eren in his decision to fight the titans. Annie's father was last scene this way too. Begging for Annie's forgiveness and giving the "I will always be with you" speech. This might be when he injected Annie with the serum.
I believe my original post had a bit more detail, but I can't remember everything I wrote. That's it for now, and keep on speculating!

    1. SWEET CUPPIN' CAKES! I never put two and two together! Annie's flashback takes place somewhere around the same time as the titans first attacked Shiganshina! In the early episodes of the anime, we see Annie walking around town by herself (Episode 2, when young Eren and Mikasa are talking and Armin brings them food).

What if Annie's father and Eren's father were both part of a scientific group, sanctioned by the government, to study the titans and come up with a way to fight back against them? They created the serum in order to fight back, but some of the scientists had differing opinions on its potential use.

WHEW! Thanks for stimulating the discussion!

  15. Wow this is some great reading. After doing some research on the writers, and the the whole Attack on Titian thing I found out some great stuff.
First thing is that the Animation cartoon has only 25 episodes wrote, and nothing more. The Manga script line has 52 episodes wrote. There is a live action movie coming in a year or so in Japan, witch I would love to see, but it will be a while before it comes to the states.
With that in mind, the writers have a lot of work ahead of them. The blueprint for all of this comes from the Manga scripts, witch are still not finished, and they can go off script any time they want and write something completely different than the intended recipient. How many different Batman and Spiderman movies have we seen through all the years?
Sticking true to their heritage, these Japanese writers will probably continue to twist and turn this as much as they can. Ergo, some guy, I shall call him Mr.X, was doctor off some sort, maybe Biological. Some great event took place that left his heart cold for revenge. Then he created the titan formula. Gathered a mass of people who would follow him and turned them in to titans.
I kinda think of a Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde story line were the bad guy won and this is the aftermath. Or maybe different spin off of zombies, except there's a pecking order.
I think that the titan in the wall is Mr.X, the Armor titian is Riener, the Colossus is Dr. Jager, and there is another female titan that's coming. The rest are mind less zombies, some are the old school Night of the Living Dead zombies, some are the 28 Days Later zombies.

  16. After reading theories on here regarding the titans in the walls, what if… the titans that are inside the walls are what is left of the ‘original’ titans that decimated humanity 850 years ago, and all other titans in the anime are fake titans created by man, from man, to try and kill them?

Following on from another theory that has come up several times, what if there were two kingdoms, and each worked on their own plans to defeat these original titans. One kingdom (the one we haven’t seen in the anime) worked on a titan formula – the injection that Dr. Yeagar gave to Erin. This formula was developed with the aim of creating the titan shifters so that ordinary humans could transform into titans themselves and combat the original titans at much less of a disadvantage than humans alone could. The first few versions of this formula weren’t a complete success, and the resultant titans were brainless and attack humans on sight, as well as attacking the original titans.

Eventually this formula was perfected, which is the formula that was injected into Erin, and also the female titan, and possibly the armoured titan too (though this may be a variant of the formula, as he is quite different to Erin & the female titan). The formula that was injected into the colossal titan was probably an earlier version that was ultimately a failure… as although it gives the user massive size and power to fight the original titans, it is too unstable and so the shifter’s titan form cannot be maintained for long enough.

At the same time as the second kingdom was creating this formula, I think that maybe the first kingdom was working on a different method of defeating the original titans: by permanently trapping them. I do not know how, but my thought was that somehow they found a way to get limited control over the original titans’ movements, and then built the walls around them. At first, the wall wouldn’t need to be thick or strong, just enough to block out sunlight so that the original titans lost the energy to move and went into some kind of hibernation state. Then the rest of the walls could have been assembled around them over decades.

The second kingdom eventually managed to kill the original titans in the area, and they let the fake titans out into the world at large (and continue to create them and send more out as they realise something is killing them) to kill any and all remaining original titans.
If the titan formula was engineered to try and make the ‘fake’ titans want to attack and kill the original titans, then this would explain why the titans seem drawn to the walled city – They are drawn to the original titans somehow… maybe they are smelling or sensing the original titans in the walls there, and humans happen to be unlucky enough to live in the place that they are drawn to.

I know that this is probably riddled with holes, but it was interesting to think about. I do strongly think that it is likely that the colossal titan was created from an earlier version of the formula though, which has now been perfected for the balance between being able to support a stable titan form, and combat ability/toughness.

    1. Wow, we got a book over here! I jest... These are great theories that deserve further analysis. There are a few things that I think are different though: One, the two kingdoms seem to be at war with each other, not with the titans... at least, not at first. I've added a bit above about a mural on the wall during the second ED (ending song) which clearly shows two sides fighting it out, not fighting with titans.
Two, I don't think the titans are drawn to the titans in the walls, but rather the people inside. If they were drawn to the walls, why would they have continued deeper into the walled area instead of just hanging around the first breached area? I assume there are titans inside all the walls here, but that's rather easy to accept. Also, if the "fake" titans are only drawn to other titans, why are the humans attacked every time they go outside the walls? It's safe to say that the "fake" titans are out for one thing: human flesh.
Otherwise, these are pretty good ideas. Thanks for injecting new life into the discussion!

    2. If you look closely at the wall painting in question 1.5 you should notice that there is a drawing between the two armies, which seems to look like a rough outline of the walls themselves, and its probably not a coincidence. From what I can tell either the two armies are fighting each other around the figure or their marching to/against it, my guess is the second option. It probably has a lot to do with Dr. Jaeger or the titans.

  17. Ok what i see in the ending credics is there is actualy 2 murals when the credics roll u see 1 mural with Eren, Mikasa, Armin and other of his team AND THEN the Camera actualy moves to the OTHER SIDE of the wall and then you see a totaly different Mural! and then u see Annie and some other characters

so what i think is that they are all from that other kingdom!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Good job on noticing the Second Mural, it completely slipped my notice! From what I can tell it is definitely safe to say that the second group of people on the opposite side of the wall are on the opposite team as Eren and Armin, but I don't think that they are from another "Kingdom". The other kingdom theory is mainly based on the ending credits and the fact that we have no idea where the Human-Titans came from. Eren did not suddenly become a Human-Titan when he was injected with a drug, he turned when he was eaten, and while in the stomach of the Titan he lost his humanity. And then turned into a Titan, which he had never lost his humanity before, so maybe he inherited his abilities through genetics.

If the Human-Titan ability is genetic and could only be awakened when you lost your humanity, it would open up the possibility that who you least expect can actually be a Human-Titan without them knowing themselves. A perfect example would be Eren, I originally thought he was going to be a bad*ss at killing Titans until he was eaten and became a Titan, many of you probably thought the same thing. Anyways I don't think that the people on the other side of the wall are from another kingdom because more than likely Human-Titans probably didn't know that they were Human-Titans until they lost their humanity.
